Palazzolo Acreide

The two main churches are particular examples which are representative of the wealth and power of the local confraternities in which lies the most fundamental role of the reconstruction of sacred spaces after the earthquake, not only in Palazzolo but in the Noto Valley too. It is through the chancellors and procurators that the confraternities promote petitions and act as mediators with the Diocese of Siracusa for renovation licenses and restoration of damaged buildings which have been placed in the hands of local workers. Due to the administering of large capital the confraternities supervision extends to all churches and their immediate surroundings, thus creating competition within the parishes to establish a higher supremacy on another parish. This so called competition translates itself on the wealth of the architecture and decorative features as well as the opposing classes of society during a specific period. In the quarter of San Paolo the more conservative aristocracy can be identified, whereas in the quarter of San Sebastiano the new social classes such as artisans, merchants and new land owners can be recognised; promoting therefore a wide post 1693 development.
The works of the master masons and architects and the events of reconstruction of the time summarise the significant character of the rebirth of small feudal suburbs in the Noto Valley.
