Caltagirone

The urban texture of Caltagirone is an emblematic phenomenon of continuity which can be noticed nevertheless some centres were affected by earthquakes in the Noto Valley. The partially redesigned city after the earthquake in 1693 still preserves an intact medieval quality on which the 16th Century crux varium interweaves itself. Of the two road networks that characterise a crossroad; the one in the North- south direction dominates with its spectacular Santa Maria del Monte Steps. The varied road network, exemplary in its altimetrical articulation, magnified by its baroque configuration, becomes a representative element of the entire urban system.
